THE LARA

The Lara  is a 137 m long former cargo ship that ran aground on Jackson Reef in 1982. Originally intact and sitting a top of the reef, she was salvaged in the mid-’90s resulting in sections of the ship being allowed to be submerged.

Today her remains lie against the reef immediately to the west of the surface-based remains. Descending next to the surfaced-based wreckage and swimming ‘reef left’, descend to 45 m. There you will start to see her ghostly remains appear from the gloom. The remains start at 48 m with her mast and sections that probably included workshops. Her bulkheads were removed during salvage allowing you to swim in and around this section. Laying on its starboard side you will then see her stern section with an impressively large propeller still attached at a depth of around 55m. Her superstructure and other sections lie at deeper depths.

The German and Italian naval and air force activity in the Mediterranean Sea, so Thistlegorm had to sail long way. She had to sail around the Africa. She sailed as part of a convoy. The convoy could not pass the Suez Channel. There was a collision in the Channel. Thistlegorm had to wait… She anchored south of Shaab Ali until sanked by German aircraft (Henkel he-111) in 6th October 1941. Since that day she was lying down in peace until she discovered in the early fifties by Jacques Yves Cousteau and in the early 1990s, she was rediscovered for recreational diving.

Thistlegorm is 126 m long and 18 m width, lying down at 30 m on a sandy seabed coming from north (the bow) to south (the stern). The stern section lies almost in the side (45 degrees), the remainder of the wreck is nearly upright. There are 4 cargo holds. Each hold 2 levels (twin decks), these twin decks are large shelf that stretched under the decks of the wreck. The hold nr 4 is damaged by explosion which ripped the roof backward (like opening a tin of sardines.)
